Bix the Handsome Handful

Bix is a purpose bred Sports Mix.  50% Staffy, 25% Border Collie, 25% Papillon, 100% Cutie Patootie.  He is 2 years old and just started competing locally in agility.  He is my 5th agility dog and a real handful.

About Bix

Although Bix is not a very large dog, he is a very FAST dog.  There is no way I can outrun him in agility.  He is a young speedy dog, and I am an older not-so-speedy handler.  If I fall behind as we run a course, I want him to feel confident that I will tell him what he is supposed to do next so he doesn’t have to check in with me constantly.  To achieve that, I have to train smarter. And I have to give my dog more obstacle focus, more independence  and more verbal skills.  Because he still has to listen to me even if he has left me in the dust!

Bix is not a one trick pony.  He is also passionate about Dock Diving and Disc.

I was Sylvie’s first Border Collie and we competed in agility.  At first we were a mess.  She was used to running small terriers and I showed her how a dog can find an off-course tunnel 50′ away.  But Sylvie is a bit of a terrier herself so she got the help she needed and boom, we became contenders.  We reperesented Canada at the 2016 IFCS World Championship in The Netherlands and came in 4th place overall.  These days Sylvie makes sure I am happy in my retirement.  She takes me on off leash walks a few times a week and makes sure the young whippersnappers in the houesehold don’t annoy me.

Zappa

Retired agility dog

I was Sylvie’s second Border Collie and showed her that everything she thought she knew about handling a fast long strided dog was not going to work for me.  She thought my older brother Zappa was fast, well, ha!  I’m like a speeding bullet and if she’s in my way I have no probelm taking her out!  I forced her to up her game and made her spend a lot of money on seminars and camps.  To her credit, she now knows how to handle me and when we are in sync it is a beautiful thing.

Bix @ Shape Up Camp 2023

Bix is my third dog that I’ve trained using the Shape Up system of handling. It has just the right balance of obstacle focus and handler focus.  Going to camp every summer is a highlight in my year.
